• Biking with uDare this arvo

    Bedgebury & Bluebells
    Bedgebury & Bluebells, Spring 2011

Meeting Wayne after work for a mad bike session near home.

The question is, do we hit Bedgebury as usual or some local trails?
Bedge is always worth a punt, and is a great place to hack about, but trails maybe more interesting, if more disjointed.

I’ve packed the head cam for the ride & hope to get some cool footage tonight.

  • Want to ‘root’ my phone

Been considering it a while, and figure it’s about time. My HTC desire’s great, but has so much pre-installed crap that I neither use nor want, all wasting space & battery life for no purpose.
Seems that putting a non-standard version of Android on there (ie not Vodaphone/O2/etc) allows lots of customising and you can add only the programs you want to use. All this can make the phone quicker, battery last longer, and entire thing feel less crowded. Would also let me get some of the cool bits from the current Gingerbread OS, which is nice.

A couple of guys at work have recently done their HTC’s, so will have a gas & see if it’s worth the time n effort.

Actually, think I’ll take a walk and do that now πŸ™‚

  • Busy day at the office…

It’s about that time for half year ‘all hands’ briefings at work today.
4 sessions of <>350 folk, me sat in the control box fettling with the mic levels to avoid feedback & hoping everyone can actually hear the boss man!

On a personal thing, I’m off to Mum’s tonight to setup her new PC, c/w new modem n stuff, which is nice. Staying over to save the long journey home & back to work in the morning, which is cool. Will miss Cheryl and the kittys though, sure the bed’ll feel huge n empty.

Web wise, I’ve setup a Buddypress site for a friend’s adventure business, something for them to mess with & see if it’ll cover their needs. I’ve also added the “Jetpack” plugin to my own wordpress site (this one), giving live tweet feed widgets, live site stats, and post proof-read / spell-check stuff, among other cool things!

On that note I’ve actually setup Twitter on my HTC desire and will have a play with that forra bit.
In case it’s useful for him, I’ve added Rod’s tweets to my home page too, as he’s got loads going on so is always good to follow πŸ™‚

    Peace out all…

    JD.

  • Bedgebury with the lads…

Had a good blast around Bedgebury last night, trails were good n tacky, hardly any puddles, and plenty of speedy bits πŸ™‚

With Steve, Malcolm, Gary n Paul from the village, they ride it most weeks.

My RockShox Reba SL forks are in dire need of a service though, they’ve lost oil from one leg & aren’t damping at the moment. Big strip down, new seals & oil needed.

  • 3 Peaks, the aftermath …

    Wowsers, that was some challenge!!

We drove 1440 miles in 3 days; the guys walking did over 60,000 steps in the 32 hours it took to complete Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Mount Snowdon; I had zero sleep between 4am Saturday & 1am Monday. Not the best possible state to be in when driving a long wheelbase minibus full of 8 people & loads of kit, but it worked & we all survived intact & undamaged πŸ™‚

Hard as the driving was I think myself & Ray had the better deal to be honest; Saturday night was pure mental, driving away from Wasdale Head (Scafell) around 2am in thick fog & the black of night, and sunday night’s 7 hour slog from Snowdon to home was totally messed up for us both, but the guys walking had a hell of a time…

Negotiating Scafell Pike in dark & fog was incredibly dangerous, slippery & sketchy, only 2 of our 6 guys made the summit, taking 6 hours in total. It still took the other guys 4 hours to go half way up & back, 45 min’s of that was just finding our car park in the fog πŸ˜₯

I took a 20 minute hike up the path around 1am to see if I could guide anyone down (and to give my Hope Vision 2 bike light a test above the cloud line :)), and that was manic enough, a soaking wet, off camber, rock strewn grassy hill side.

We tested lots of motorway services, ate more MacD’s in a 3 days than I’d normally eat in 5 years, and we all kept in good spirits throughout.

Was a big achievement for everyone in the team, whether they made all 3 summits, or simply drove to them.

  • Gettin prep’d for the odd weekend

Final prep’s happnin here, goona leave work early today, to get bag & car all packed & ready to fly. Leaving work at 6am in the morning, with hope to reach Fort William by 6pm.

So grabbing sleeping bag, thermal tops n bottoms, boots for a wander around Scafell and Nevis areas. Will of course take my HTC phone & update/fettle with this damn blog n facebook while at each site, IF we get signal that is πŸ™‚

Otherwise it’ll be ipod and magazine’s that’ll keep me sane, and maybe try working out the best road route to next mountain.

All your base are belong to us.

  • Funniest/most random ebay description…

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220768216260

A class quote among many – the item for sale is a Mint Green car, by the way.
” There are a couple of places (arches, rear bumper) that have been resprayed in places probably due to surface rust in the past. I say resprayed, it actually looks like it’s been done by a drunken blind clown at night hanging upside down from a moving giraffe. Honestly, Ghandi could have done a better job slapping paint on with his flip flops.”

The additional notes & Q&A sections are as funny as the original post too.

Also sold his X-wing upgrade (LINKY), check out the Q&A section πŸ™‚

  • Pyjama Weekend!

Saturday’s ‘Pyjama Day’ got stuck on repeat today, with Cheryl still feeling the effects of her buggered upper back/shoulder combo. So a day indoors relaxing & watching more films seemed like a good move.

PAUL (Simon Pegg, Nick Frost) was great fun, entertaining & well made, gotta love it!
The Fighter (Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale) was good, annoying at times as their family were such (albeit well acted) bad people, but it really came together at the end. It’s based on true story & people too, which made it all the more watchable.

We even managed to eat well having made a great curry yesterday, just to eat on this evening πŸ™‚

  • 3 Peaks – more details on tap…

Got more of an idea about next weekend’s adventure, thought I’d share it…

Myself and ‘Ray’ will do all the driving, covering about 1500 miles in the mini bus, with a team of 6 guys doing all the walking/climbing.

We leave Rochester early on Friday morning, heading for a YHA near the Nevis range, hope to go for a big Pasta fuel up before bed πŸ™‚

We’ll get up at dawn’s crack Saturday for the guys to climb Ben Nevis at 6am, once they’re off I’ll head out on the bike to do Fort William’s XC loops for a few hours, which should be great. I’ve never ridden in Scotland, so that’s a tick in the box.

They should return about 11am when we’ll drive to Cumbria as fast as the minibus let’s us, with luck they’ll start Scafell Pike about 3-4pm. If I’m up to it, I’ll go for another ride, as it’ll be 4-5 hours before they’re back again.

Hopefull they’ll have no issues & we should leave for Snowdonia about 8-9pm Saturday, so they’ll start up Snowdon around 2am for another 4-5 hour slog finishing about 6am the following day. We’ll try n sleep while they climb Snowdon, as it’ll be a quick blast home as soon as they get back.

Might book the Monday off actually πŸ™‚
